“The Enneagram is a personality typing system that teaches there are nine basic personality styles in the world. These styles, or “Types,” deeply influence how we think and act. But what does that mean for us as leaders?”

Review by Jim Brewer

Here at BrewerLeadership we use two personality assessment tools. Predictive Index and Enneagrams.

Predictive Index is a powerful tool that identifies what drives you. The model has been around for 65 years and is statistically valid for hiring. PI does not assess your values and beliefs or your skills and background. However by looking at four personality drivers for each of us, it does an amazing job of bringing actionable insights. It is a great tool to put the right person in the right seat, to help us know how to manage and develop that individual, and learn how a team of different profiles can best work together.

The Enneagram model has been even longer than 65 years. Some source material has been linked to ancient greek and religious texts from the christian and jewish traditions even sufi stories. Claudio Naranjo, a Chilean psychiatrist was exposed to the Enneagram and brought the Enneagram into the modern psychological tradition in the 1960s.

The Enneagram model represents individuals as one of nine personality types. These personality types are formed in childhood and expressed as adults. One of the interesting aspects of the model is each personality type can be looked at in a continuum of development from dysfunctional to healthy.

It is truly insightful. I would recommend a couple of books if you find the podcast interesting. The best reference is Wisdom of the Enneagram by Riso and Hudson. The author Ian Cron interviewed by Donald Miller at StoryBrand, also has an excellent book called The Road Back to You.
